Halloween Dance Class Idea: the Haunted Pathway.

Halloween Dance Class themes are the best, and all kids love it, no matter what the age. One dance game that I used this past week is called: the haunted pathway.  You take the dance concept pathways and give it a little Halloween flare. Here is a fully scripted out lesson for the Halloween dance class idea.

1. Prepping for the lesson:

Materials:Halloween music, colored shurtape, and fun Halloween stickers.

Classroom set up: I would tape(colored shurtape) geometric shapes on their assigned dance spot, for example, one row of kids can have their own individual triangle, and one row of kids can their own individual square. It’s a little bit of work on your part, but worth the full engagement you get from your kids.

1. First things first!  Have them exercise moving on the pattern of their pathway shape by playing freeze-dance. For example, have them explore walking, skipping, and hopping only on the pathway of their shape,  and then stop the music and have them freeze (In a shape) on the line of their shape.

2. Haunted Pathway Game Level 1:once they can move on their pathway shape with full body control and stay on the lines of their shape, then take the pathway game to the next level with the haunted pathway theme.

*Teacher: ask the students, ” Now you have explored what it feels like to move along the pathway of your shape. In spirit of the Halloween holiday, how can we move on our own pathway shape using the Halloween theme?

* Student:  answer you’re looking for, ” we can walk like a wolf on our  pathway shape.” Another example answer,  ” We can pretend we are creeping through a haunted house.”

These are just a few examples to get them really engaged in the activity. Now, ask the kids to pretend their shape is the pathway through a creepy and dark forest. Then after a minute of exploring this idea, stop the music and have the kids freeze. Incentive time:  now ask them to pretend that they are a wolf on the prowl in this forest. Explain to them that you will give a halloween sticker to a student who can prowl on their pathway the best (They’ll love it!) Keep giving them places and characters to explore on their pathway shape (And stickers) until they get really good at it.

3. Haunted Pathway Game Level 2: Let the students create the haunted theme. They are really warmed up to the idea of moving like characters and haunted places on their shape, now have them create the haunted pathways. A good way to set them up for being the haunted pathway creators is to have a competition. For example, tell the students that they are to pretend they are walking through a swamp. Explain that who ever can look the most scared and freeze in the best scared shape, he or she will get  a sticker and get to chose the next haunted  pathway.

4. Haunted Pathway Game Extension: now have the students switch with someone in another line to explore characters and places that they already danced as on a different pathway shape.

This Halloween dance idea can be a lot of fun, I know my kids love it. It is just another great way to hook your students into learning important dance content such as the dance concept pathway.
